What is Ayurveda? | Ayurveda, or the "Knowledge of Life", is an ancient system of holistic medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It is not just a medical science but a way of life that encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Rooted in the principles of balance and harmony, it emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body, mind and soul.
What are the Three Doshas? | Technically speaking, there are five governing elements called the “Panchmahabhutas”: Air, Space, Fire, Water, and Earth. These elements combine to form the three primary doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, which represent different energies within the body of every living being. For ease of understanding, the three doshas are often referred to as Vata = Air, Pitta = Fire and Kapha = Earth. Each individual's constitution is a unique combination of these three doshas, resulting in a distinct dosha balance that defines their unique physical, physiological, and psychological traits. By gaining an understanding of one’s dosha, one can make appropriate dietary and lifestyle choices that are in alignment with their dosha. In order to remain aligned, the doshas of dietary and lifestyle choices made need to be dominant in opposition to the dosha of an individual. For example, a Vata individual should have a diet and lifestyle dominant in Pitta and Kapha to maintain his balance of dosha.

How does Ayurveda work? | This tailored approach we use allows individuals to optimize their health by addressing their specific needs and mitigating potential imbalances before they arise. The Ayurvedic perspective of health is understood in terms of whether the doshas are balanced (optimal health) or imbalanced (diseased state). This proactive approach to health enables Ayurveda to recognize and address disease long before symptoms manifest that would be diagnosed in modern medicine. By identifying early warning signs and focusing on preventive measures, Ayurveda empowers individuals to take charge of their well-being.
What can Ayurveda do for me? | If an individual consistently follows a lifestyle or diet that contradicts their dosha constitution, one or more doshas may become aggravated. Over time, prolonged dosha aggravation can lead to significant imbalances, which eventually result in disease symptoms that affect various aspects of health, including physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This holistic understanding underscores the importance of harmony between the doshas and emphasizes the need for conscious living to maintain health and well-being. It highlights the timeless relevance of Ayurveda in today’s world, offering a framework for mindful living and sustainable health practices. At Ayur Alive, we aim to combine this ancient holistic approach with researched modern nutrition towards achieving health goals in a way that is both sustainable and personalized. By blending traditional wisdom with evidence-based dietary and lifestyle practices, we strive to create solutions that cater to individual needs and promote long-term well-being. |
